A very expensive blackout

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp services were disrupted for more than five hours this Monday and the company said the following:

"This network traffic disruption had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a standstill."

The technical problem took Facebook's main social network, its photo app Instagram and its WhatsApp and Messenger services offline for hours. As a result, the longest outage ever recorded could be observed.
