Weekly Excerpt 08/23/2021

Weekly summary from August 16 to 20

  • Negative week for the US equity market, with all three major indices closing the week with declines. The S&P 500 closed the day Friday the 20th in positive territory, but this could not prevent the negative performance for the week. Within the eleven sectors, the utilities sector has had the best performance with a rise of 1.8% and on the other hand the energy sector has presented the worst performance with a fall of -7.33%.
  • Negative week for the European equity market. The main indices have been painted in red for the week. The EuroStoxx 50, has lost -1.9%, representing its deepest decline since February.
  • Oil has continued its third consecutive week of declines, with Brent and WTI down -8% and -9% respectively. Fears of an economic slowdown and the strengthening of the dollar, in the face of the possible withdrawal of stimulus, have not sat well with the commodities sector.
  • Among the highlights, we can mention that there has been a considerable increase in Delta variant cases, US retail sales data declined, the FED is indeed considering reducing its bond purchases this year, and the latest economic reports from China indicate that growth in the world's second largest economy is under pressure.

To keep in mind during the week

  • Investor attention will be focused on the Kansas City Federal Reserve's annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium. The theme of this year's virtual meeting is "Macroeconomic Policy in an Uneven Economy." While no major policy announcement is expected before the September FOMC meeting, President Jerome Powell's roadmap for how the Fed plans to deal with tapering the purchase program and a possible interest rate hike will be closely watched.
  • President Joe Biden said the United States has expanded its evacuation efforts beyond the perimeter of the Kabul airport, while warning of possible terrorist attacks and acknowledging that it may be forced to delay its deadline for leaving Afghanistan. Against this backdrop the US president will virtually meet with G7 leaders on Tuesday the 24th to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan.
  • In Europe, the focus will be on Thursday, when the ECB releases the minutes of its July meeting, when it released updated forward guidance on interest rates and implemented a new monetary policy strategy designed to boost inflation. As in the U.S. the previous week, investors will scrutinize the minutes for clues on how future stimulus plans may evolve beyond the scheduled end date of the ECB's asset purchase program in March.
  • Many investors will be keeping a close eye on the performance of Asian companies after Beijing's regulatory crackdown caused U.S.-listed Chinese stocks to suffer their longest streak of weekly losses in a decade.
  • By now 476 S&P 500 companies have reported second quarter results for the year, of which 88% have managed to beat analysts' expectations. In a light week of corporate results we can highlight JD.com, Best Buy, Xpeng, Dollar General, Salesforce, Snowflake and Peloton among others.
  • PayPal has announced that it will allow its UK customers to buy, sell and hold bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies starting this week. This announcement marks the first international expansion of PayPal's cryptocurrency services outside the United States.
  • Pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. said early Monday 23rd that it would buy shares of Trillium Therapeutics (TRIL) Inc. in a deal that values the cancer drugmaker at USD 2.26 billion.
  • Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has managed to reach the USD 50,000 level again for the first time since mid-May. This has marked a recovery of the cryptocurrency market, after steep declines just three months ago.
